About Roland KeyesSome of you remember me, the rest of you should get to know me. Those that remember, know that I started out spinning in my parent’s garage when I was very young. Upon receiving my first set of turntables I disappeared for about 2 years. My friends use to bug me and ask “when you coming out the bat cave foo?” They didn't understand that I needed to be alone to be able to focus and learn how to mix and scratch. Since I had no one to teach me. I quite literally had to figure it all out on my own. Plus so many great producers were putting out good tunes that kept me busy...well...time went on and for a while there it seemed as though everyone wanted to be a DJ. So why did I want to start DJ.ing in the first place…I think it all started @ my nephews birthday party…I was like 12 or 13 years old and my sister got our older cousins to DJ. They set up lights, fog and speakers I was like woe!!! Then they did something even more amazing…they turned that shit on and played a RECORD!!! As if that wasn’t enough…the people all got up and started dancing!!! I was completely blown away…then about a year later the youngest of my older sisters comes home from a “rave” like @ 6a.m. and hands me a metallic green mixtape that would forever change my life. It was R.A.W. and it was some HARD as TECHNO that did it to me. I followed RAW around for years to watch him mix, then I would go home and mimic what I saw him doing. Thanks to RAW and Roni Size for unofficially putting me up on game. My 2 biggest influences have always been RAW and Roni Size. I got my first set of turntables widda mixer one year later. In 1994 "Power Tools" on KPWR Power 106fm featured 1 of my Techno mixes for half an hour. 1995 They played my Hard Trance tape and in 96 I placed in the top 40 (with a dnb mix) of over 500 entries. 1997 had almost 700 contestants and I was 1 of only 2 drum and bass dj's in the top 20 on the Power Tools DJ Contest. I spun @ a whole bunch of warehouse and rooftop parties in Wilmington, Carson, Gardena, Torrance, Long Beach and Los Angeles. When I wasn’t spinning at a party I was at somebody’s party getting my boogie on. . I’ve been to everyone's party's and I do mean EVERYONE's party’s because I’m a HUGE fan and supporter of the music. I couldn’t imagine life without it…as matter of fact I use to carry a backpack full of my favorite records with a 10inch mixer everywhere I went...cuz you never knew who has turntables. I also worked at Pro Sound & Stage Lighting or PSSL.com as a product specialist. I met Jim at Roland US he introduced me to the MV-8800 and a MC-808. The first vinyl I ever bought was called 93 till infinity by Souls of Mischief. That's only because I didn't know where to buy Techno, House, Jungle or Trance...not until I found Funky Town in Torrance, Record Reaction in Long Beach and Dr. Freeclouds in Costa Mesa and not to mention The South Bays One and only One Stop DJ Shop WP Records.(I use to work there I ordered the jungle stuff from Edwin @ Free Burnin. Funny because I had been to free burning before working @ WP Records it was on Traction Ave, across the st. from Crazy G's. There was one crate and it was full of heat! Big respect to Nate and all the cats @ Free Burning. Be on the look out for mixes...ELECTRONIC SOUND I like it ALL so, if it sounds good I'm rinsing it. Be on the look out for my mixes and peep my website @ www.laconfidentialdjs.com --- I stay dedicated because of my LOVE for music...I like it and really hope you guys enjoy it as well. Listen, dance, smile or cry...
